What small group training is
Small group training, or small group personal training, is the industry's name for one coach delivering individual programming to several people at once, usually somewhere between five and eight. Each person has their own loads and progressions; what they share is the hour, the coach and the room.
Done well it combines structured strength work, progressive programming and purposeful conditioning, with the coach moving between people to adjust movements, refine technique and decide when the weight goes up. Done badly it is a class with a smaller cap.
Who it suits
- People who want structure: a program that progresses over time instead of random workouts.
- People who want some guidance: a coach in the room, even if not beside every set.
- People who struggle with consistency: booked sessions and a familiar group help.
- People shopping on price: the format costs less per session than private coaching because the coach's hour is split many ways.
Where Coresa stands now
Coresa coached small group training for years, with groups capped at eight. In October 2026 we stopped offering it and moved fully to personal training, delivered 1-on-1 or semi-private.
The reason is results. Eight people on one coach is honest coaching, but it is coaching rationed by the clock, and the people who came to us for it were often choosing a price point first and a result second. Personal training flips that: your coach's attention is the product, every session is prepared for you, and the plan is built around your goal rather than around a timetable.
What that means if you were looking for small group training
If what you wanted was a coach who writes your program, chooses your loads and watches your sets, you were describing personal training. The personal training page explains how it works here, and the free consult is a fifteen-minute phone call to work out whether 1-on-1 or semi-private fits you better.
If what you wanted was company at a lower price, semi-private personal training is the honest middle: a coach shared by a few people, each still on their own program. If what you wanted was a class, the group training landscape page maps the North Shore's options by category.
Small group training or small group personal training?
Two names, one thing. Small group personal training is the term the industry uses when a coach delivers individual programming to a handful of people at once; small group training is the shorter name most people search for. Where the labels genuinely diverge is at the edges: sessions of two to four people are usually sold as semi-private training, and anything past ten is a class whatever it is called. The only number worth asking any studio for is the cap.
How a coached program progresses, in any format
The load moves when the evidence says it should. The coach records what you lifted and how the last rep looked, and a set that finishes strong earns more weight next time. A set that turns into a grind keeps the same weight and improves the quality instead. That mechanism is the same in a group of eight and in a private session; what changes is how closely it is watched. The coach's side of the clipboard is in how your program progresses.
The exercises coached here
The movements in a coached session are not a secret. Our exercise library documents each one the way it is coached on this floor: the setup, the cues, the faults corrected most, and what it progresses to. Staples like the goblet squat, Romanian deadlift and farmer carry are where most programs begin.

Common questions
Does Coresa still offer small group training?
No. As of October 2026 Coresa offers personal training only, 1-on-1 or semi-private. This page stays online to explain the format for people researching it.
What is the closest thing to small group training at Coresa now?
Semi-private personal training: a coach shared by a few people, each on their own program and loads. It keeps the company and the lower per-session cost while bringing the coach much closer to every set.
How is small group training different from a fitness class?
A class gives everyone the same workout. Small group training gives each person their own loads and progressions inside a shared hour. Personal training goes further: the whole session, not just the loads, is built around you.
Is small group training the same as small group personal training?
Yes. Small group personal training is the industry term for individual programming delivered by one coach to a handful of people. The shorter name is simply what people search for.
How do I find out which format suits me?
Book the free 15-minute consult call. A coach asks what you are training for, what your body objects to and which hours you can keep, then tells you honestly whether 1-on-1 or semi-private fits.
